An MOT is an annual test every vehicle must have in order to keep it safe on the roads. It involves the inspection of many components that will determine whether the car has failed or passed. Fortunately, most garages that carry out these tests also offer repairs, so in most cases will be able to get your vehicle up to passing standard.
Can You Prepare?
You don’t have to fully prepare for an MOT as if there are any problems, the garage will assist. However, there are some things you can do to optimise your chances of passing the first time.
Clean Your Car
While it doesn’t have to be sparkling, it’s always a good idea to have a presentable vehicle. Make sure to clean out any rubbish beforehand to make it easier for the technicians who will be working on your vehicle. Also, if the outside of a vehicle is caked in dirt, it’s important to get this cleaned off. Make sure that your number plate is visible. If it isn’t, then fixing that should be one of your top priorities. If you’re caught out on the roads without a visible number plate by the authorities, you could get a fine.
Check Lights Before MOT
Before your MOT, check that all of your car’s lights are in working order. Issues with lights are often cited as one of the reasons for failure. make sure that it doesn’t become yours. Operate the lights from inside the vehicle and get someone to walk around and check each bulb is working. Most lights are affordable and simple to change yourself.
Test Your Tyres
Tyres are also a big reason why many people don’t pass their MOT. They mustn’t present any cuts, bulges, or obvious damage. They also need to have a certain tread depth in order to be legal. You can check this before your test and get them sorted, or your garage can assist.
The minimum tread depth is 1.6mm across the central 3/4s, around the whole tyre. You can easily measure this at home with a 20p coin. Simply place the coin in the tread, if the outer rim is visible, it means the tread is too small and the tyres will need to be replaced.
